Plymouth has the sea woven through everything, and that's its great advantage for a date. The Hoe looks straight out over one of the finest natural harbours in the world; the Barbican's cobbled lanes run down to the water where the Mayflower set sail; and the restored Royal William Yard might be the most handsome place to eat and drink in the whole South West. Add Dartmoor on the doorstep and Cornwall a short ferry ride away, and the only real risk is freezing at the sheer choice.
So this is a working list, not a tourist round-up. Twenty-two ideas grouped by what they're actually good for, with honest notes on which suit a first meeting and which are better held back for when you've relaxed. There's a sample first-date itinerary at the end that strings a few of them together into an evening that flows with the tide.
"Novel, slightly adventurous activities done together build attraction faster than another round in the same bar — psychologists call it self-expansion, and a waterfront city like Plymouth is full of them."
— The LoveCertain TeamCheap and free ideas (when you barely want to spend)
1. Walk Plymouth Hoe
First dateThe wide grassy headland above the Sound, with the red-and-white Smeaton's Tower, war memorials and one of the best sea views in England. Free, flat and side by side — a walking date that handles its own conversation. Time it for late afternoon and the light over Drake's Island does the rest.
2. The Box
First dateFree. Plymouth's flagship museum and gallery, with the figureheads suspended overhead, natural history, art and big touring shows. What someone slows down in front of is its own conversation. A perfect wet-weather first-date plan right in the city centre.
3. The Barbican & the Mayflower Steps
First dateCobbled streets, the old harbour, galleries and the Mayflower Steps where the Pilgrims left for America. Wander, peer in the gift shops and art studios, watch the fishing boats. Endless things to react to, and an easy exit at either end if it isn't clicking.
4. Tinside Lido views & the foreshore
EitherEven out of season, the art deco Tinside Lido jutting into the Sound below the Hoe is a gorgeous spot to walk past, and the foreshore paths give you the sea up close. In summer, a swim in the saltwater pool is one of the best cheap dates in the city.
5. Devil's Point & Stonehouse
EitherWalk out to Devil's Point for the meeting of the Tamar and the Sound, past the grand Royal William Yard. Free, atmospheric and quieter than the Hoe, with watery views in every direction. A lovely side-by-side stroll that feels off the tourist track.
Daytime and weekend ideas
6. Royal William Yard
EitherA vast Grade I former naval victualling yard reborn as bakeries, bars, galleries and restaurants right on the water. Wander the great stone courtyards, grab a coffee or a pastry, watch the boats. The single most handsome place in Plymouth to spend an afternoon of a date.
7. Cremyll ferry to Mount Edgcumbe
EitherA little passenger ferry from the Yard crosses to Cornwall and the Mount Edgcumbe country park — follies, formal gardens, deer and coast paths. The crossing turns a walk into a small adventure, and a whole afternoon costs barely more than the fares. Genuinely lovely.
8. National Marine Aquarium
EitherThe UK's largest aquarium, on the Barbican, with a vast ocean tank, sharks and rays. A couple of hours, plenty to talk about and completely weatherproof. A reliable, slightly playful daytime date that works for either stage.
9. Plymouth Gin Distillery tour
EitherThe oldest working gin distillery in England, in the Black Friars building on the Barbican. A tour and a tasting, then cocktails in the refectory bar. A bit of an event, structured enough to take the pressure off, and a built-in talking point. Good for either stage.
10. Saltram House (Plympton)
EitherA grand National Trust mansion in parkland on the edge of the city, with a Capability Brown landscape, a tearoom and river walks down to the Plym estuary. A calm, grown-up day out that feels like more effort than it costs.
Sort out the harder part first: who you're going with.

Evening and date-night ideas
11. Seafood at Rockfish or the Barbican
EitherRockfish on the waterfront does proper fish and chips with a view; the Barbican is full of relaxed seafood places where you can share plates. Sharing beats two formal individual courses for loosening conversation, and the harbour setting does the heavy lifting.
12. Dinner and drinks at Royal William Yard
Second dateAs the light goes, the Yard's restaurants and the Column Bakehouse glow against the old stone. A proper dinner here signals real effort without the stiffness of a tasting menu. Better from the second date, once a good meal is about the food rather than icebreaking.
13. Sunset drink on the Hoe
EitherThe bars and the Waterfront below the Hoe let you have a drink looking straight out over the Sound. Time it for sunset and you barely need to plan anything else — the view carries the mood. Pure Plymouth, and good for either stage.
14. A show at Theatre Royal Plymouth
Second dateOne of the best-regarded producing theatres outside London, with big touring shows in the main house and sharper work in the Drum studio. An evening with built-in conversation for afterwards and a clear sense of effort. Better once you're past small talk.
15. Cocktails at the Distillery or a Barbican bar
Second dateThe Plymouth Gin refectory bar and the better cocktail spots around the Barbican do a proper drink somewhere with character. A cocktail with a sense of occasion signals effort without committing to a whole dinner. Good for date two or three.
16. Immersive dome at Market Hall (Devonport)
EitherThe huge immersive dome at Devonport's Market Hall shows 360-degree films and digital art unlike anything else in the South West. Short, novel and a genuine talking point — the kind of slightly unexpected experience that makes a date memorable.
Active and slightly adventurous
17. Boat trip around the Sound
Second dateBoats run from the Barbican round the Sound, the breakwater and up the Tamar past the warships. An hour on the water is exactly the kind of shared, novel experience the research rewards, and the city looks completely different from the sea. Weather-dependent but memorable.
18. Sea swim or paddleboard at Tinside / Mount Batten
Second dateA water taxi from the Barbican drops you at the Mount Batten peninsula for paddleboarding and swimming, or take the plunge at Tinside Lido. Doing something a bit daring together — and laughing through it — is a fast track to comfort. For the warmer months.
19. Wembury beach & the coast path
EitherA short drive east, Wembury has rock pools, the Mewstone offshore and a National Trust café right above the beach. A coast-path walk and a cream tea make an easy, beautiful half-day. The sea air and the views do the work for you.
20. Dartmoor on the doorstep
Second dateThe moor is 30 minutes north — tors, ponies, ancient woodland at Burrator and a pub lunch at the end. A proper walk with big skies is a real change of pace once you know you both enjoy the outdoors. Pack boots and a flask.
Seasonal Plymouth
21. British Fireworks Championships & summer on the Hoe
EitherEach August the Hoe hosts the national fireworks championships over the Sound, and the whole headland fills for it. Through summer there's open-air everything — a festival-night date with a ready-made plan and endless things to react to. The best time of year to date here.
22. Christmas Market & the lights (winter)
EitherThe city centre and the Piazza fill with a Christmas market, an ice rink and lights through December. Go on a weekday early evening to keep it walkable, then duck into a warm Barbican pub. A classic low-effort winter date with a festive backdrop.
A sample first-date itinerary that flows
Meet on Plymouth Hoe in the afternoon and walk along the front past Tinside (free, side by side, big views). Drop into The Box for 40 minutes if the weather turns — instant conversation, no pressure. If it's going well, wander down to the Barbican for sharing plates and a drink by the harbour as the sun goes down. One loose plan, several natural exit points, and nothing that traps you in a three-hour dinner with a stranger.
The thread running through all of this is simple: the best dates give you something to do and somewhere to move on to, so the conversation has room to breathe. If you want the mechanics of the date itself — openers, timing, what a good follow-up looks like — our complete first date guide covers it, and daytime date ideas is worth a read if evenings feel too high-stakes. Psychologist Arthur Aron's research on self-expansion is the reason novel shared activities work as well as they do — worth knowing before you default to another drink.
For where to actually sit down and eat or drink, our guide to the best date spots in Manchester shows the format, and our wider UK city dating guide sets out how the rest of the country compares. If you're weighing up where people actually meet here before you even get to the date, dating in Plymouth covers the local scene in full.
